On to the Next One…

A couple weeks ago, I sent out some emails requesting a critique of my site. If you’ve paid attention in the past few weeks you would have noticed it change more than a few times. One of those critiques came from Jeremy Cowart, whom I admire greatly. He asked me, ‘Who are you?’. He went on to say, ‘Even stylistically you’re kind of all over the place. Lots of various styles. Just SO many questions and flags man…Your site says to me that you’re confused and don’t know who you are. Clients are looking for specific vision and your website is incredibly confusing.’

I apologize to you, Jeremy, if you get mad that I posted this. But it really got me thinking. I should say, it really bugged me. A lot. Not the critique itself, because I love input. It’s just that someone said I was confused. Then I was listening to a song by Jay-Z called, ‘On to the Next One’. The song is basically all about change and his new style. There is a line in it where he says, ‘People want my old sh*t, buy my old album’. It really struck a chord with me.

After Jeremy sent me this email, I tried and tried to think of my ’style’ and what I could do to appeal to people. I knew I wasn’t doing what people say when they say, ‘if you do everything, you appeal to no one’. But my style, it’s all over the place. But I love that. I love that everytime I shoot, I can do whatever it takes for the look. So with that, I have decided to stick to my bread and butter, and that is…..whatever I want!

I know you all think this is out of left field, but I had to vent. Lol. This post may come down soon.

Coffin Freedom ‘88

Friendship and fun can come at you when you least expect it. I added Jordan as a friend on Facebook back when I was trying to network with fashion designers in the Baton Rouge area. I was thinking that I would want to add something new and fresh to my portfolio. Well, nothing really came of it at the time and I stuck with my senior portraits and sports work. I forget the details in the middle, but I got an email from Jordan, and I hesitate to say ‘in a panic’, but a photoshoot he was planning had fallen through and he needed someone else to step in. So we did some planning and then finally got to shooting. I’ll be honest and say it was nothing that I had ever done before. But I loved every second of it. I loved the uniqueness and how it was something very new to me. Through that, I have helped Jordan realize some of his goals and see them come to life. I have also made new friends in this whole process. I will do this again and again. Jordan, I hope you enjoy your shots and I look forward to us working together soon.

ESPN ‘The Shot’ – Update

Well, I’m in 3rd place now. Looking at how many entries there are for this, and quality of the shots, I’m very excited. BUT, I still really want to win……like BAD. In fact, I don’t think there is anything I’ve ever wanted to win more. Does this sound like a plea for your vote? Yes? Good, because it is. As I mentioned before, the grand prize is a trip for 2, to NYC, and a photo assignment for ESPN Magazine. I need to win this.

Voting ends December 19, 2009.  So I need to make a run, get in front and stay way out in the lead.  Click here to vote.

Thanks so much for all of your support.

I Idolize This Guy

It’s no secret that I am an enormous Jay-z fan. Both musically and non-musically. I found this video from the Oprah Show really fascinating. This is a person who never shares his private life, so this very brief look into his is so interesting to me. There is also a line that sticks out in it that I couldn’t agree with more. He says something like, “I’m not trying to be Ralph Lauren, but he’s the one I’m definitely chasing”, or something along those lines. Man, I couldn’t agree with that more. Especially when it comes to trying to model my business and marketing in the Chase Jarvis fashion. Or when I look at a guy like Tim Mantoani, someone who has worked extremely hard and is in the EXACT place I want to be in. Incredibly talented and smart men. Anyway, here is the video:
